1. Visual blindness: The customer doesn’t understand what’s inside or how to find you

The most common mistake in local marketing is an information vacuum. A user visits your profile to make a decision but is met with a wall of uncertainty.

  • Where is the menu, and what does the dining area look like? If it’s a restaurant or café, guests want to see the menu in advance (preferably in a readable format, not a blurry PDF in endless Stories) and get a sense of the space’s size. How big is the space? Is it suitable for working on a laptop or a romantic dinner? If the profile doesn’t answer these questions, the customer will simply choose another place.
  • A scavenger hunt called “Find Us in Tbilisi.” Tbilisi’s streets are beautiful, but finding the right photo studio, dental office, or beauty salon on the first try is often an impossible mission. The lack of clear landmarks is incredibly off-putting.

What Your Instagram Should Include:

  • View from the street and the sign. Photograph a simple, clear path from the road to your door. Show what the entrance area looks like and whether there is parking nearby.
  • Floor plans. Show the scale of the establishment. Customers should be able to understand the layout and overall atmosphere before their visit.

2. Cost savings on product photography: food that doesn’t look appetizing

Food in the HoReCa sector is all about emotions. It’s hard to sell it through dry text on a menu. You need to sell it through the visual appeal of the dish, its texture, and the aesthetics of its presentation.

  • Mediocre visuals kill sales. Photos of dishes taken “haphazardly” with a phone under poor restaurant lighting make even the most expensive and delicious dish look cheap and unappealing.
  • Ignoring status-enhancing details. The devil is in the details. Aesthetic cloth napkins instead of paper ones, high-quality hand moisturizer in the restroom, beautiful tablecloths, and expensive tableware—these details instantly elevate the establishment’s status in the eyes of guests. But for some reason, no one talks about this on social media.

What Your Content Should Include:

  • Professional food photography with just the right lighting, showcasing the texture of the sauce, the freshness of the herbs, and the steam rising from a hot dish.
  • An aesthetic focus on the details of service and customer care that creates a sense of premium service.

3. The other extreme: “polished” art-house films instead of commercial releases

When a business recognizes the importance of content and allocates a budget for it, another problem often arises — the subjective opinion of the decision-maker. The business owner or marketer begins to promote their own specific “vision” of beauty, which is far removed from reality and the audience’s actual needs.

  • Content for content’s sake. The venue’s profile turns into a gallery of art photos that are too conceptual, too dark, or too blurry. This looks stylish on design mood boards, but it’s completely uninformative for the average person.
  • The result: There’s plenty of beautiful aesthetics, but it’s completely unclear from the profile what the venue looks like under normal lighting, what kinds of events you host, and what you actually sell. Visuals this detached from reality don’t attract — they actually scare off a new, more down-to-earth audience by creating a false sense of pretentiousness.

A balance between aesthetics and informative content. Creative shots should be interspersed with clear, lively reports: this is what our guests look like on a Friday night, this is what a lecture looks like, and here’s our signature dish in natural light.

Empty Hall Syndrome and the “I Want That Too!” Emotional Deficit

When a potential customer browses your social media or website, a trigger of empathy should go off in their mind. They should be able to picture themselves in your space, feel its vibe, and experience a distinct emotion: “I want to be there this Friday.”

But often, when you look at the profiles of Tbilisi establishments, you get a completely different impression.

  • The Museum Effect. You’ve invested thousands of dollars in interior design, and in all the photos — there are impeccably arranged empty chairs, spotlessly clean tables, and… not a single living soul. It creates the lasting impression that no one ever comes to your place, and that the space itself is cold, lifeless, and boring.
  • The “Forced” Waitstaff. The other extreme is when marketers realize they need people in the shot, but instead of creating an atmosphere, they force a tired bartender or hostess to pose. The audience instantly sees through these forced, staged shots, and they only create awkwardness.

People buy from people. It’s important for them to see guests on your profile who are chatting, laughing, clinking glasses, and genuinely enjoying the moment. This creates social proof: “This place is awesome, it’s full of life, these people are just like me — I want to go there, too.”

How to strike a balance and keep your profile from becoming a mess:

There shouldn’t be too much of this type of content, but it must be included in your visual layout.

  • There’s no need to ask guests to look at the camera and force a smile. Capture the details of their interactions: hands holding glasses against the backdrop of a beautiful sunset, genuine laughter, lively movement on a summer patio, and the play of light on their faces.
  • A shot can be without faces but still convey a human presence: a half-empty cup of filter coffee next to an open laptop, a jacket casually draped over the back of a chair, a warm, half-eaten croissant. Such details bring the interior to life and make it feel “lived-in.”

How can you turn a visual into a sales tool?

For your social media and website to start generating bookings and orders — rather than just racking up likes — your visual strategy needs to be clear to your customers:

  1. Provide basic information. Make it easy for customers to find you: a sign, parking, a clear map, a menu, and photos showing what the rooms actually look like.
  2. Showcase your product in a high-end way. Whether it’s a plate of pasta, a hotel room interior, or a spa treatment — it should be photographed with high quality, using the right lighting and focusing on textures.
  3. Highlight your service through the details. Show the little things that make people want to come back to you.

If you want to revamp your business’s visual identity in Tbilisi, create a content plan that drives sales, and ensure your social media channels bring in real customers — I’m ready to help you develop and implement this strategy.
